I have been working at A&P part-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Part time hours can be flexible. Union does provide some benefits, though not for dependents if you are part time.

Cons

No raises for 5 years, cuts to vacation time, many other give backs just so the company can continue to drive stores into the ground. Union labor also means that raises were based on length of service, not on job performance.

    I worked at A&P full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    A decent cafeteria that offers subsidized breakfasts and lunches in the building. Helps save some money. It is sad that this is ALL that I can think of in terms of "PROS" for this company.

    Cons

    - incompetent Top management. Out of touch with their employees and overall reality of the competitive landscape
    - No Pay raises since 6 years
    - No bonuses since six years. EXCEPT for the executive management team. People are reeling in inflation and into poverty but the CEO gets a $750,000 bonus.
    - Bad facilities, building and zero ammenities.
    - TOTAL lack of support for employees including super short maternity leave allowance, 5 sick days allowance for a year, they call you to work during hurricanes and snow storms when the state has declared an emergency and is asking people to stay indoors.
    - Top Management is fly-by-night. They join, they make their millions, they have no understanding of the company or its environment and then they leave.
    - No avenues for growth. The company has decayed through incessant rounds of layoffs and there is potentially one more coming real soon. There is a hiring freeze since forever. The existing employees are dying because of the mountain-load of additional responsibilities that keep getting added to their desks yet none of these overworked employees have gotten ANY pay raise to even so much as combat the inflation.
    - This company provides EXPENSIVE benefits, it does not match 401k at all.
    - Top management has installed turnstiles and cameras and bugs all over the building to monitor employee movement, conversations, restroom breaks, cigarette breaks and such lowly things.
    - This place is truly one of the most astonishingly terrible places to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Shame on you! You have ruined employee morale and nearly crushed your employees without pay raises and exponentially increasing responsibilities. You take hefty bonuses and fly in your private jets while you strike off vacation days off of employees if they couldnt show up due to Hurricane Irene an Hurricane Sandy. Employees houses got destroyed yet you sent out emails urging them to come to work "or else". Sam Martin you did not have enough decency to say one word of THANK YOU to people who were working in Montvale without electricity freezing their butts off after the hurricane. You people should try to foster employee morale. You need to be more aware of how you have ruined your worker's life. The start of 2013 and 2012 saw a mass exodus of employees leaving the company and yet you shameless people did not learn anything. You have provided NO INCENTIVE for anyone to stick to this company. Everyone in my floor talks about looking for jobs and wanting to leave. Shame on you....for leaving such a terrible legacy behind. You top executives have destroyed the company and are not in the LEAST BIT aware of how our competition has killed us because of your dumb business decisions. You sit there outsourcing every department of the company over to India, Mexico etc while you lay off your own employees and make 6 figure bonuses. You will pay for this and answer for this greed someday.

    Friendly people made the work day pleasant
    Decent training by senior employees
    Negotiable wages

    Cons

    Management is nearly delusional. I've even had a a anger who drank on the job!
    Really need better locations of your stores.
    Needs to be a better inventory system
