Client oriented company run by good 'ole boys oblivious to the needs of employees.

Pros

ABC labs is one of the few pharma companies in the area so it does provide (fairly stable) jobs for many people in surrounding towns. Adequate vacation and sick time allowed.

Cons

Management is concerned with the appearance of company operation...not actual functionality. There are so many vice-presidents responsibility is diluted to the point where nothing ever happens in a timely manner. The training program is inadequate at best (when there actually is any training) and the communication between analysts and managment (at least in some departments) is absent causing the analysts to be reprimanded for breaking rules they didn't know existed. Employees are treated with very little respect, to say the least, and working hard will get you rewarded with more work and the opportunity to pick up the slack of those who don't. Those who don't work hard but do just what's asked of them by management are rewarded with promotions because management wants as many yes-men as possible. It is impossible to maintain a feeling of pride in one's compnay and work when the employees are treated so poorly.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate ideas, wants, and needs to the employees actaully doing the work. They will be able to help you create a solution to your problems that is actaully feasible and will also make them feel valuable. Treat analysts with respect like the educated people you hired them to be. Start a training program by hiring someone who knows what they are doing.

Good first job right out of college, but not for long term employment

    Pros

The coworkers are generally helpful and good to be around. They made work worth going to. Many of the PhD scientists are very smart and very willing to help and train new employees if they have the time.

    Cons

Some members of the lower management team are not completely competent in their job (management wise and science wise). Promotions and favoritism go hand in hand. Suck up to the boss if you want to move up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The employee moral is very low. The management team is not doing anything to fix this, especially when they are "cracking down" on things such as deeming small talk between coworkers as unprofessional and unacceptable.

    Pros

The best reason to work here is because you have no other opportunity. The pay is okay, but you will be isolated from other opportunities because they are really the only science based company in the area.

    Cons

They didn't pay commissions due to me upon leaving. ABC Labs continues to hire from outside the company when there are good quality folks available within. There is this perceived notion that people from pharma know the contract services business better than their own employees. Be careful about signing a non-compete agreement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When people leave, they take their experience with them and share it. In my case, I talk about how ABC still owes me money and didn't pay other salespeople as well. The non-compete agreement needs to be dropped. You threatening to go after folks for going to work for another company is a waste of time and something I tell other folks about.
