I worked at ACDI/VOCA full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

The people are fantastic, and the culture is very positive, with an emphasis on collegiality and personal growth. You will learn the ins and outs of USAID project implementation and most likely have the opportunity to travel. The management structure is fairly transparent, giving employees the chance to express concerns. Lots of professional development opportunities for self-starters.

Cons

Like many companies in international development, there is a heavy emphasis on winning new business with USAID and other donors (not necessarily a negative, depends on your perspective). Sometimes support staff contributions are undervalued.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work, but try and integrate support staff into core business activities to motivate and inspire them.

    Pros

Employees are passionate about their work.

    Transparency in how they operate.

Good leadership team which communicates well to the employees.

Support for employees to seek out development opportunities and for employees to have a real work/life balance.

Senior management is focused on "controlled growth", which shows that they have an eye to ensuring the long-term success of the organization.

    Cons

Promotions above mid-level can be a bit difficult to come by.

Junior and mid-level staff have fairly high turn-over, but this is common in the international development business.

Need more systems set in place for both project management and new business. They are getting there, but still have a ways to go.

There needs to be more communication between the technical portfolios. Activties can sometimes overlap and there could be more knowledge sharing of best practices.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.

Don't lose sight of the fact that employees who feel valued stick around.

Think more about ways to systematize procedures.

Good learning experience for junior employees, management is mixed

    I worked at ACDI/VOCA

    Pros

The organization is good about providing opportunities to junior staff to move up and to travel once they prove themselves. Having a good manager who will advocate for you is critical. The organization is also growing, which provides a lot of opportunities to work on new projects.

    Cons

Management can be a bit inconsistent, and it can be difficult to understand the overall organizational strategy. There is also a lot of turnover at the junior level, but this is common in the industry.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clarify the organizational strategy, to help staff understand where the organization is going and what the priorities are.
