I worked at ACT full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

The assessments are research based and there is value and meaning in what the results of ACT testing says and can mean for students, parents, schools, districts, and states interested in better preparing students for college and careers.

Cons

People from outside of the current Iowa City leadership are limited to what they can contribute, how far they can advance, and what they can change/improve by way of leadership intimidation.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be change in leadership at the highest level in Client Relations. Cronyism is a destructive force and it is limiting growth and stymieing the true potential of ACT's best and brightest staff and contributors.

I worked at ACT full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I would work there again if I was desperate and had a prescription to anti-depressants to fall back on. Nice campus... in the middle of nowhere.

    Cons

Clueless management, no plan for the future, the floor littered with failed projects. Death by a thousand project managers. Completely incapable of seeing the value of long term employees. Outsourcing. All the core products are under threat by more capable companies. Culty-management garbage (appreciative inquiry).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about the business and the employees and see if you can't find a way to succeed without leaving your employees cowering in terror of layoffs and outsourcing.

A promising journey ended too soon by ignoring the voice of the internal customer

I have been working at ACT full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Constant challenges, great colleagues, familial environment, opportunity to learn different areas of the business. The company's mission has value and meaning and the intent of the offering is good.

    Cons

Your greatest contributions can be overlooked if you don't know the right people or fit a certain image, which is a surprise given how the company claims to value uniqueness but does not. Too much organizational change without benefit to the bottom line. People are added at the top and bottom, leaving the midstream barren.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Move to a matrix structure and instead of promoting or hiring based on perceived merit, do so based on actual merit, and most of all, when a voice with a strong track record is screaming for help, listen to it.
