Former Employee - Intern in Long Beach, CA

I worked at AES Corporation as an intern for less than a year

Pros

AES Alamitos has a good property and good positions to work in. You get to enjoy the california warmth during the winter and a reliable schedule to follow. also a plethora of coffee machines are available to employees

Cons

there is an ungodly amount of drama and stuff that happens between the employees. and during the summer you'll be sweating your balls off in your FR suit. Also as an engineering intern, they made us paint a lot and didn't allow us to do a lot of stuff with the engineers and upon doing inspections there is a lot of stuff that had VERY old maintenance tags on it.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

management does it's job well, and no advice is to be given other than to put effort into making sure maintenance on the power units and systems are kept up to standards and working conditions

I have been working at AES Corporation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pay is pretty competitive with the industry. Company almost always gives bonus (can range from 15%+).

    Cons

There has been many layoffs so the work load is increasing for those stays behind. Opportunity does not appear to exist; there's a hiring freeze at the moment.

I worked at AES Corporation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Entrepreneurial culture
    Company mission
    Interesting emerging markets development work
Pretty fluid and laid back environment - only Execs wear suits
Can be highly compensated - good bonuses

    Cons

Lack of accountability for managers, hence, poor management in many departments
Extremely political. A lot of power jockeying, especially given power vacuums due to frequent reorgs.
Poor people development and mobility prospects for lower ranks (Analysts, junior managers) - largely due to rotational directors that pass through departments for 2 years and move on without investing in people's advancement.
Top heavy, gap between junior staff pay and senior managers is huge. Departments often have multiple VPs - reporting lines are not clear.
No unified culture, experience depends a lot on what department you work in
Flexible vacation, and work hours but only if your manager goes along with it
Very low morale over past 2 years.
Nepotism in favor of particular latin cultures with strong presence in senior management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retain some change management consultants to help deal with the reorganization process. Company morale could be saved if change was transparent and communicated effectively. Resolve the people development issue, the company is very top heavy. Take a close look at the people management skills of the Directors and VPs that run departments - this is generally the core issue. Hold managers accountable for not meeting targets or deadlines, instill a culture of performance.
