Current Employee - Business Analyst in New York, NY

I have been working at AIG full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

A lot of vacation days are given. Some of your colleagues are nice. Great work location sometimes. Work from home opportunities given to some.

Cons

The culture is terrible. No one wants to do any work or be helpful. Everything is extremely political. The expectations for work are high but there are no systems or people with knowledge to get anything done. Pay is horrible.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just start all over.

Current Employee - Underwriter in Neptune, NJ
Current Employee - Underwriter in Neptune, NJ

I have been working at AIG full-time

    Pros

Neptune NJ location: pleasant area. Underwriters here are knowledeable and share their knowledge freely, as do a number of other staff.

    Cons

Merged this year with Medical Excess, and now we are in zonal silos, with very little communication between zones. Two out of the three zonal VPs know very little of Group underwriting, so they have unrealistic expectations. Crushing workload and no understanding from management. No raises. Company tries to limit bonuses. Too many scattered, faulty administration systems, too much manual/clerical work to underwrite cases.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to care more about your employees or you will continue to lose them. We need to act like we're all one company - not 3 separate ones.

  2. Some super talented people to work with, but a lot of disorganization plus extreme bureaucracy and terrible HR policies

Former Contractor - Various Consulting Roles in New York, NY

I worked at AIG as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Talented people to work with and overall positive work environment (i.e., flexible hours when needed, work at home when needed but not ever day, family flexibility, etc.). There are SOME great businesses with challenging positions if you are in a business that is growing and profitable.

    Cons

Extreme corporate bureaucracy -- every decision requires layers upon layers of approvals. You often get approval to take action then 3 months later are told to stop because someone 5 layers above has a new strategy or new rules. HR policies are ridiculous and HR staff are either overloaded or incompetent to say the least -- found it downright impossible to hire people to work for you, even for approved positions that are in the budget.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give executive managers more power to make decisions and eliminate unnecessary bureaucracy. Replace the entire HR organization with one that supports employee growth and develops talent versus the current staff that just enforces rules and provides zero valuable support.
