I worked at AIG full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Good opportunities to learn and advance - they pay for training such as actuarial exams, CFA, FRM and the like. Good work-life balance- although you are expected to work hard, you can actually get away at the end of the day.

Cons

The company went into federal receivership, which resulted in losing some of the international companies. FP lost billions of dollars, which resulted in major organizational changes and the diminishment of the company.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on being an insurance company, not finance.

I worked at AIG as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The schedule is manageble and work load is not unreasonable. They are willing to accept new ideas and tasks are not mundane. In general people are nice.

    Cons

The work atmosphere is gloomy. The level of competition among workers overpowers the team work. Interns are often looked down upon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement better teaching and orientation for the interns. Encourage relationships between mentors and subbordinates.

I have been working at AIG full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

As of last year, very generous PTO policy, good 401K match, decent bonuses (on paper), some departments have began to promote flex work arrangements.

    Cons

No raises for the past 2 years. Ridiculous performance evaluation process with a forced "performance curve" whereby good performers end up with bad ratings to meet the "curve" and get stripped of bonuses. Poor systems and IT support in general. "Boys club" at the management level making it impossible to get promoted, very policital. Generally, virtually non-existent promotions, even at lower levels, despite consistently high performance ratings. Very limited opportunities for training. Grueling hours in some departments (such as financial reporting). Office space downsizing touted as "workspace optimization" resulting in people being placed in shoebox size cubicles, even at director level. Useless HR unable to take action.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are too many change initiatives going on at the same time. Manage and prioritize change properly, do not overload people by 100s of "top priority" projects. Give people raises just to keep up with rising prices and inflation!!! Get that performance curve in line with industry standards - it's impossible to weed out 20% of workforce every year on the grounds of poor or unsatisfactory performance. Use some common sense when planning work space - people can't work in a cube so small that you cannot even move your work chair. Outsourcing IT support to India was not a smart decision - it has been taking weeks to get even small things fixed thus hurting productivity. Establish career paths that are real and allow for people move up and get promoted.
