A Company On The Rebound

Reinsurance Analyst (Current Employee) Parsippany, NJ

Pros1) Generous Paid-Time-Off (although sick days are treated the same as vacation days), 401k, pension plan, and health plan.

2) Short-term incentive - in the form of a year-end bonus - is given to encourage superior employee performance.

3) Telecommuting is possible for employees who demonstrate competency in assigned tasks.

4) Emphasis is shifting from contractors/consultants to hiring full-time employees, so as to build in-house knowledge.

5) Work-Life Balance is great for recent hires (with roughly 1-2 months experience); '9-5' days are certainly attainable.

ConsFrom a macro-level, the biggest con is that on-boarding and training procedures for new/recent hires are poorly defined. The following are three micro-level examples:

1) On-boarding procedures are inefficient, with average required time ranging from 2-3 weeks for new hires.

2) Training provided to new hires has been slow to improve. Inconsistent quality of lesson material, manager inavailability, and poor structuring of sessions still exist.

3) Periodic evaluations of new hires are inconsistent, and do not follow any metric or formal documentation. There is no way to compare your performance against your other colleagues.

Advice to Senior Management1) Work towards improving on-boarding procedures for new hires. Much of the initial 2-3 weeks is under-utilized.

2) Work towards improving the training for new hires. That includes defining/sticking by the manager-led instruction schedule, assigning managers who can effectively teach the material, planning and executing effective sessions, and instituting formalized evaluations.

3) Work towards improving workplace software and Internet connectivity issues.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
