I have been working at AKQA

Pros

AKQA's reputation in the marketplace is second to none.

Cons

The requirement of people's billability is a bit unrealistic.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less hierarchy in all departments. Account Management, creative, technology, and project management are way too deep.

I have been working at AKQA

    Pros

Great client list, some fantastic work and awards. Very creative indeed and most of the work has an edge of cool to it. Some really nice, driven people. Great fun if after work drinking with your work mates is your thing.

    Cons

Horrendous working hours, bad account management and absolutely no long term project management. Life is just one great big pitch - when it comes to actually delivering it is a very difficult environment to work in, especially if you are not one of the Creatives.

Playing catch-up seems to be the norm at AKQA - they either don't accurately scope how long things take to do or they spend so much time wasting time that everyone ends up working til midnight to kick something through the door.

I don't think AKQA are great at anything that outside of mega creative. Technical reasoning seems to take a back seat and nobody thinks too hard about users either.

All in all, not a great place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop working your great people to death. Allow enough time to develop properly. Practise all those fantastic things you preach in your pitches.

I have been working at AKQA

    Pros

    * It's a great name on your resume given its presence in the interactive world.
    * Amsterdam is a great city to live, and AKQA isn't too bad about the hours.
    * if you fit in the click, and can carry your own weight in creative, you may survive.

    Cons

    * Immature, conflicting managers will behave passive-aggressively rather than talk directly about interpersonal issues.
    * absence of positive mentorship: if you ask or brainstorm with your manager, this means you're creatively incapable- running low on patience.
    * you're considered an outsider if you don't participate in the post work-hours bar & drinking scene.
    * the agency is completely dependant on other AKQA offices, lacks independence in its decision making, except of course for letting people go.
    * complete absence of account planning and true insights. it's all based on big-shots improvisation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the talent within your own walls, and play the mentor role to have it bear fruit. figure out your organizational structure: you've got too many bosses with unaligned opinions, and so few talents.
