Good culture if you don't mind big companies. No respect for Software Engineers.

Current Employee - Member of Technical Staff Software Engineer in Austin, TX
Current Employee - Member of Technical Staff Software Engineer in Austin, TX

I have been working at AMD

Pros

* Lower management generally fair and do a pretty good job of looking out for the best interest of the DEVs and the products
* Pretty good pay and benefits
* Good culture (compared to some other big companies)
* Some really smart & talented people, especially in the software group
* Relatively stable. While not universally true, downsizing typically affects lower-performers

Cons

* No respect for Software Engineers
* Upper management out of touch with software engineering ethos
* Culture changing somewhat for the worse
* Constant pressure from management to hire _somebody_ rather than wait for excellent devs
* Ridiculous software process (counting lines of code and bugs fixed to measure team "success")
* Objectionable stance on patents (constant pressure to submit _something_ just so the company will have more in its portfolio)

Advice to ManagementAdvice

* Treat the software team with as much regard as hardware design or the "smart & talented" people are going to start leaving.
* Turn software-org monolith into small/sharp teams that serve different needs and give them the power (and help!) to create their own process (including having their own SOFTWARE project managers)
* Treat internal-serving software groups like their own real org and allow them to be measured/rated by their customers as if they were real customers.

    I worked at AMD

    Pros

Challenging work from the technical side of things
    Good benefits
    Beautiful campus

    Cons

    Incompetent upper management
Only the best for management, and the least for the technical staff.
Management refuses to admit when they are wrong, and will sink the company rather than change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to what is happening in your mid to lower level management. Good people are walking away almost as fast as you replace them with contract labor.
