I have been working at AMEC full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Global reach, great engineering staff with a wealth of experience and very friendly

    Cons

Very bureaucratic, very limited support for graduates, poor management which does not engage and communicate with all levels of staff, management does not look after projects instead left up to engineers to sort out (but with no time allocated), bad resourcing leading to employment of new staff without any real project work, inefficient systems, limited allowance for investigation and visiting sites

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in young engineers and give them adequate training and resources. Engineering workforce is generally old and young engineers can offer a cheaper alternative and can in many cases perform the same tasks as senior engineers. Also invest in proper computer systems, they will not cost you anything in the long run (the payback is next to nothing when you consider the hours lost by staff waiting for the computers to perform simple tasks).
You need better communication and integration between your various business activities. I realize a lot of the business units are an agglomeration of recently acquired companies, but co-operation can start with something as basic as picking up the phone and communicating something essential to a colleague in another business unit. These efforts do not need to start at management level, everyone should be able to engage in looking for new opportunities for co-operation.
From what I have experienced in my office Amec needs better project managers who can look after projects efficiently and engage with engineers.
