I have been working at ARRIS

    Pros

Acceptable management team (there are a few weak ones, but also a lot of very good ones). Flex hours. Recognition for a job well done. Periodic town halls to keep us informed. Exciting products with good growth in the industry. Good benefits.

    Cons

Some teams understaffed/overworked. Starting to lose small company spirit. May be slipping behind the new product introduction curve. Leadership team "aging". Need to bring in more young leaders to ensure future success.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Conducting CEO round table and skip level meetings might surface some ideas for improvement from us hard working employees in the trenchs. Make sure rewards and recognition are shared equally across all departments... appears slanted towards sales team. Grow a younger managment staff. Need a balance of Sr leaders and younger managers looking/wanting to grow.

    I worked at ARRIS

    Pros

    Good vacation/holiday/time-off
Solid industry-no lay-offs during bad economy
Strong technical people, but many are there on visas, so no choice, but to stay where they are

    Cons

    Medical benefits just so-so
Sweat shop-work you to death-tell you it will change and then same thing again
    Some arrogant managers
    Some nasty/uncivil people
Management tells you things will change and they don't
    No modern engineering practices
Requirements are a joke, design is non-existent, just code and we'll try to fix it later
Schedules set, resources set, and scope always increases and they wonder why the quality of product is poor

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a hard look at Beaverton. If you care about the products, fund them appropriately and look closely at engineering processes and management. If you don't care, just wait a couple years and all the talent will have left. New people will try to figure out how things work without any documentation. Products will die on their own.
