Pros

Great pay and benefits. The work varies from job to job, so you're not necessarrily doing the same thing twice. Most of the people there are pretty secure with themselves as it is a union job, so there's not much of a I'm better than you mentality. I get to work on communication systems that serve lots of people. So it's a fairly unique job.

Cons

They pay you well so they expect a lot out of you. The job confrontsyou with different challenges that can be solved different ways. And I'm supposed to know everything. It can be a bit overwhelming.

Advice to Management

Look for the people who advance their knowledge outside of work and help them get to where they want to be in their careers.

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits. Stable work.

    Cons

Hard work and education doesn't pay off

    Advice to Management

Try promoting people based on ability and knowledge instead of your friend or your friend's wife. It will help the company and you will get bigger bonuses

AT&T is lost in bureaucracy and "old" telecom thinking.

    Pros

AT&T is a fairly well run company from a financial perspective.

    Cons

Process and procedure runs rampant with lots of conflicting direction. Goals and incentives are often cross-competing against benefits to shareholders. The merging of SBC, Bell South, AT&T, and Cingular has created horrific posturing by senior leadership who are out for land grabbing. Senior leadership is not interested in retaining good people right now because they are very focused on cost reduction and head count management. They would rather have good people quit than lay off bad people due to the short term cost with no view to long term value or indirect cost to the overall company vs their own cost center.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at your people management. Employees feel used and abused. Use and encourage VP/Directors to spend time morale building--this does not have to cost "money" but just time and energy from your leaders. Ask your leaders to actually lead in addition to "manage".
