I worked at AT&T full-time for more than 8 years

Pros

If you are Union, you are safe. Good job and good employees to work with. If you go to management, the experience may be different. Benefits include medical, dental, 401k, U-verse discount, and union pay (guaranteed salary increases over time). Any work beyond scheduled workweek is paid with overtime or double time (on holidays). Advancement opportunities are sometimes available.
For Engineering or Mgmt: Excellent salary and benefits as well. No weekend work. Some training available as well.

Cons

For craft positions (Unionized technicians) the cons are few. Sometimes you may get a jerk for a boss, but that doesn't last too long. You must comply with attendance and safety for sure. They are very anal about being to work on time. You must pass pole climbing.
For Engineering and Mgmt positions: "Fiefdoms" of power within management. Cronyism is everywhere. The adage: "it's who you know" is prevalent here. Make sure you get along with your future boss, or he/she may give negative feedback and affect your employment or bonus. There is very little room to advance to upper mgmt. in Florida. Your best chance for upward mobility is working at Corporate in Texas or Georgia...if that's your goal. Good luck.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managment needs an overhaul. Your business strategy is only as good as your employee's happiness. If you treat them like second class, you will get second class results. Treat all your employees fair and the same, and end favoritism. Stop competing for power, and work together. Streamline some processes, and offer more advancement possibilities for future stars. Create an enviroment of knowledge sharing, instead of knowledge hoarding.

    Pros

Friendly atmosphere, great benefits, everyone was helpful and there is a sense of loyalty among employees who had been there for many years.

    Cons

Very clicky management, they play favorites within sales team. Many managers just holding on till they can retire and don't try and motivate or inspire team. Feel like they are just counting their days.

Not for everyone, constant change including many downsizing driven by regulation and internal
    politics.

I have been working at AT&T

    Pros

Great training in team environments. Respectable brand to work for with all the advertising seem by consumers in the telecom/wireless space.

    Cons

Dying wireline business will inevitably cause shifts in processes. Not a lot of room for out of the box thinking like you would see from market leaders like Google or Facebook.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

ATandT has a long history of innovation, but seems to be dwindling as the market lead to companies like Google and Facebook. We have an opportunity to fix if we can employee loyalty and satisfaction. Budget cuts and the old thought of more with less without investing in our employees will cost is more of our best and brightest. Need to remove perception that seniors managers are building/protecting kingdoms for self interest and the good old boy network.
