Former Employee - Senior Technical Team Lead in San Ramon, CA

I worked at AT&T

Pros

Flexible work environment. Able to telecommute or flex hours when requested. Provided with proper work tools and comfortable working environment. San Ramon facility has (had) a nice cafeteria. Middle management VPs encouraged employees to be making themselves fireproof or at least technosavvy so they would land well if they lost their jobs.

Cons

Out sourced a lot of IT to IBM, which in turn, off shored to other countries. End result was a lot of AT&T employees out of work. San Ramon facilith was due for refurbish. Training was encouraged, but not a lot to be found.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer more training in the salaried IT area and make the process for taking advantage of the training more visible.

I have been working at AT&T

    Pros

there are great opportunities to move around within the company, excellent salary and benefits. AT&T fosters an innovative environment - "rethink possible".

    Cons

Pressure to work long hours, tight deadlines. Coworkers are geographically dispersed, which for some, might take some getting used to - but conferencing and collaboration tools are great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the great working transforming the business to operate as "One AT&T" because it seems to be working well.

I have been working at AT&T

    Pros

    great work life balance
    competitive salaries
    good benefits/pension
very professional and ethical organization - you can usually feel very proud of working for AT&T

    Cons

no significant, formal career progression program.
limited movement/relocation of employees to round out skill set
extremely rigid expense management and customer entertainment policies - to the point of negatively impacting business

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1) Fully integrate acquisitions vs. leaving them as stand alone, partially integrated entities. See Wayport and formerly Sterling as examples.
    2) Hire all new advertising/marketing people inside and out. The beating we take in the court of public opinion and the press is hurting the brand. We should be telling the world that we're a completely American company whereas Verizon is almost half owned by British based Vodafone and T-Mobile is owned by German based Deutsche Telekom.
    3) Create a broad-based company wide rotation program to encourage personnel to work in various business units in various functions.
