It's All About the Store Manager

I worked at Aaron's full-time (more than a year)

Pros

Guaranteed Hours (minimum of 45+)
Good Benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401K)
Sundays always off, and 1 other day mid-week
Employee Purchase Plan (payroll deduction)

Cons

The most challenging part of the job is meeting or exceeding your goal; in whatever position you have (either sales or collections). It is far easier to make a sale than it is to collect money... especially months down the road when a customer feels entitled (although they never own the merchandise until they make the last payment). It is extremely difficult to achieve goal in the collections department; only 1 store will achieve this out of an entire region in a pay cycle. The only exception to this will be tax time where your customer can't wait to payoff their agreements. Depending on how well you treat the customer, they will either come back soon, or tell you they will never do business with you ever again.

A few customers will be downright nasty; cursing at you over the phone, hanging up on you or threatening to return the merchandise. As an accounts manager, you'll be required to field visit customers homes that can be in some bad areas. Be prepared... you'll encounter filthy living conditions including roaches, bed bugs, fecal matter. There are also strict policies and procedures; you can be fired for renting to a co-workers family or friends. You could also be accused of faking phone calls and terminated even though you know the end result of the phone call is no answer, disconnected, not accepting incoming calls, not available now. You can also be fired for getting a low score on a phone shop - 2 of those and you're gone. It goes without saying if you steal you will be immediately terminated.

In the end it's all about the Store Manager, since he/she sets the tone on everything; employee relations, store vibe. Like many jobs, it's not the job itself, but the people who work in it that make all the difference. Make no mistake about it, working at Aaron's is a very high stress job. You are very rarely rewarded even when you hit your goals.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Respect your tenured sales and accounts managers. Give them a second chance if they have a bad day. Promote positive reinforcement vs. negative feedback. Make them happy and want to work for you. Delegate responsibilities and mold employees how you want them to be. Don't just coach them, develop them. Enable them to take on more tasks. If a customer likes you, they will pay you! If an employee likes you, they will want to work for you and produce more. This is why it's so important to believe in your staff that they can do an excellent job. Boost employee morale by lightening up and having a sense of humor. During 5B4 Friday meetings, get everyone together to recite the Aaron's promise to promote teamwork.

    I worked at Aaron's full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

They worked with my schedule so I could keep going to school.
It was a paycheck and it paid the bills

    Cons

    Long Hours
Sketchy Neighborhoods you had to go into to collect money. Actually had a cop pull up and tell me I shouldn't be in the neighborhood because it was dangerous.
Unrealistic expectations. You had to get a certain amount of money collected per month from people who do not want to pay it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow up, stop shifting out general managers. You can not have continued success if you keep changing managers every year.
