Decent Company, Strange Culture

Alameda, CA

Current Employee – been working at Abbott Diabetes Care full-time for more than 7 years

ProsPeople are very motivated to help those with diabetes. Nice location. Great pay and benefits (bonus, stock, pension). Better than average job security. Interesting products that help people. A decent place to work overall.

ConsPoor teamwork. Groups are set against each other, and within groups there are favorites and rejects. This is not an open environment: yes-men will flourish. If you are cautious or highlight concerns instead of successes you are often punished. Oversight is ineffective - nobody asks questions in reviews, from bottom to top. (I would be punished if I asked probing questions so I am silent.)

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have talent available, but you are not effective in forming teams. You believe you are doing well because you stifle concerns. I don't know a single engineer who does not chafe under the management in private, but those who try to speak up for another way are hammered back down. (You are either for us or against us) The company could perform better if we weren't divided.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
