Former Employee - Associate Merchant in New Albany, OH

I worked at Abercrombie & Fitch full-time

Pros

- Great exposure to cross functional teams
- Good opportunity to work at a large cap company and have real responsibility very young
- Opportunities for management very early in career
- Fun, creative, aspirational corporate culture

Cons

- Very little training given to managers so you're likely to have at least one really bad manager while you're there
- Hours not so great, usually 12 hour days
- Responsibility and promotions usually given to who the higher up's like the most, or feel is the best fit for the company (i.e. wears all current A&F clothing, is tall, slim, and blond, and never plans to leave Ohio) rather than who is most qualified. Beware of this!

  1. It was a fun environment, with fun people but definitely had some negative aspects.

Former Employee - Sales Associate (Model)

I worked at Abercrombie & Fitch part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    -flexible part time hours
-great first job or through college
    -discounts on clothing
    - fun people
    - long time friends
    - easy work

    Cons

    - intimidating if you're skinny but by no means a size 0/00.
    - REALLY loud music which you get used to but still can't be good for your hearing
    - really smelly
    - meticulous folding
    - super strict look policy (dress code)
    - can be boring depending on your location and if you're the greeter stuck up front for 5 hours

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I loved all of the managers. It does take some time to feel like they like you, but if you prove you're reliable, they'll come around.
As for the district managers... Unless you're pursuing modeling (and are the A&F ideally sized model) its best to lay low with them. They can kill your self esteem in an instant, if they even acknowledge you to begin.

I worked at Abercrombie & Fitch full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Being able to work with people your age is fun.

    Cons

Terrible pay - bottom of the barrel but yet they require you to have a Bachelors degree. They give no employee discounts except once a season for the exact outfit they want you to wear.
Unethical - Hiring totally based on looks. If you see someone attractive you can offer them a job right then and there. But if they're not up to "company standard" you cannot hire them. It's awful.
Work/Life Balance - They don't care about what's going on outside of work. Retail hours are hard enough but they'll have one manager closing every night and then the other opening. It's completely unfair and vacation is non-existent.

You're screwed and now your sales are reflecting it.
