A good work environment, some management problems.

I worked at Academy Sports & Outdoors full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great work associates, decent discount on store items. The stores are brightly lit and comfortable to work in. The people you deal with on a day to day basis typically are nice and easy to work with. Customers appreciate and service they receive and will tell you so. It is nice to be rewarded with complements on your own hard work.

    Cons

The management sometimes had conflicting views on things and could not sort it out between themselves. A lot of the time the blame if something had been done wrong would be placed on the associates, even though a different manager had told them to do it that way. Managers need to communicate better between each other and let the associates focus on customer service and keeping the store presentable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice would be to have team building exercises in the separate departments and for the managers of the various departments. It seemed at times that the managers were working against each other (hard goods, soft goods, front end, receiving) and even the store director didn't work with them. They all had their own separate agenda which worked against the flow of work throughout the day. If they could find a way to strategize together, the stores would benefit greatly.

I have been working at Academy Sports & Outdoors full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

It is a growing company and the work is not bad.

    Cons

Bad hrs, bad pay, incompetent managers, store directors, and district managers. It is very hard to move up. Management drags feet when it comes time to promote. They want you to do the work of management for starting associate pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to value your associates, team leads, and senior team leads. Do a better job at scheduling high volume departments at peak business times so busy departments are not under staffed during holidays and busy times, such as every Friday night and Saturday and Sunday. Listen to your team leads and sr team leads. They are on the floor every day and know what is actually going on. Do not try and micro manage when you sit in the office or training room all day/week and are completely out of touch with what is happening on the sales floor. If you are going to micro manage, at least familiarize yourself with the current POGs and merchandising standards before incorrectly telling associates and team leads how something should be done.
