Former Employee - Inventory Control Manager in Floral Park, NY

I worked at Advance Auto Parts full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Full timers qualify for medical, dental, prescription, and vision benefits. They also have a good human resource department. The job is very good for a person who has knowledge of motor vehicles an dhow they operate.

Cons

Stores are more than likely to be understaffed about seventy-five percent of the time. The company frowns about overtime pay. Another problem with working with this company is that the stores are open on most major holidays.

    IT Professionals Beware!

I worked at Advance Auto Parts full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Compensation in the Roanoke region is top notch

    Cons

The CEO team and the IT management group simply do not care about employees. They are (mistakenly) of the opinion that no matter how employees are treated, compensation will keep them from leaving. This company will suffer serious "brain drain" as a result if/when the economy turns around. There is no culture, there is no personality, there is no fun. Potential employees beware: HR will tell you anything to get you in the door - the stark, cold reality is that AAP is terrible place to work, with tremendous amounts of interdepartmental infighting and massive pissing contests on a daily basis. Politics supersede logic, and innovation is not welcome.

Additionally, the IT department is stuck in the technological stone-age. IT is the business' beotch, and many (not all) of the department heads on the business side have their heads so far up their asses that it's no wonder the company is struggling financially. I have no vested interest in your well-being as an employee, but if you value your career AND your personal life, heed this advice: Walk away from the job offer. Find a better place to work - it shouldn't be very difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try competing on price rather than the intangible "service". From a cultural perspective - try creating a culture of innovation and synergy, rather than silos and infighting. Also - try setting your growth goals realistically.

If I were CEO, I'd close that money-wasting office in Minnesota and suck it up and relocate to Roanoke. Get a clue Darren! You made a series of redundant hires in Minneapolis and spend God knows how much for that building, with it's parking garage and 3 sparsely populated floors, while your new "team" there continues to insult the "redneck hillbillies" in Roanoke on a repeated basis. You cannot possibly reconcile the cost of that office logically. It just isn't worth it - if those people want to hold on to their jobs, they should relocate to Roanoke. You know I'm right, even if you won't admit it.

I have been working at Advance Auto Parts part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

My coworkers are fabulous! They are all male and there is almost no drama with them like there can be with women. Even when the store is dead there is always something new to learn. This job can be very exciting.

    Cons

Not everyone works equally and sometimes the part timers are left to finish projects others start. Also no one is really interested in keeping the store clean and neat unless someone important is arriving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep on your workers, cut your losses, and help out the hard workers.
