I worked at Advance Auto Parts full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Well balanced and solid IT leadership team. The IT Leadership team really worked hard to understand their business partners while striking the balance of innovating.

Cons

A few fire drills, and management had to "grow" to understand what needed to happen. The company has a lot of legacy and old systems, so there are some definite challenges in staying "up to date" on new technology while simultaneously supporting the old.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand the business at a deeper level. Senior management should really attempt to understand the customer as well. The leadership in MI felt disconnected from the Roanoke team.

    Cons

    This company was great until they started micro managing everything we do in the store. Why have managers if all they do is carry out tasks and not actually manage.

    Pros

    As GM you still can hire your own staff without interference. Thus you can surround yourself with cool people at the store level. If you get a good GM it is easy for a great team member to move up. However, GM's have to juggle many grenades to move up and out of a store. Base pay for a GM is ok as long as you managing a hub store or one that does over 35k a week.

    Cons

    Micro. Management. GM's are becoming just another keyholder, only with crazy amounts of responsibility. Absolutely no appreciation for what a GM does from upper management....none. If you hit sales target 27 out of 28 days the one day you're guaranteed to hear from your DL is that one day you missed target. CDL is a sick joke. And the GM bonus plan is laughably bad.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Ignite is becoming too cumbersome to manage at the store level. Scrap it or focus on 3-4 things and not eighty. CDL needs to die....today, before it destroys the company. You cannot grow sales and add endless tasks while slashing payroll. That math equation does not work and never has. Get a legitimate GM bonus plan in place, let your GM's run their business, and stop micromanaging everything. And for goodness sake lose the scheduling templates. Stores can't or won't follow them anyway. This can be a great company if it ever gets out of its own way.
