I have been working at Advisory Board full-time for less than a year

Pros

Young professionals will benefit tremendously while at the Advisory Board Company:
- Opportunities to contribute meaningfully to firm-wide initiatives
- Fast growing firm = very young, high potential for promotion
- Firm is focused on professional development, great place to start your career

Cons

Not too many (or significant) cons:
- Work-culture is hit-or-miss based on department
- Hard to see staying at ABC for more than five years (you'll outgrow the place)

    I have been working at Advisory Board full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Great exposure to senior management in the firm and folks from other departments including account management, marketing and research

    - Excellent client interaction experience; you will have the opportunity to present to C suite level executives at top hospitals and health systems

    - Opportunity to enhance analytical skills particularly using Excel

    Cons

    - Appalling senior management (particularly in the CPRM team): most of the senior managers in crimson don't have masters degrees and ABC was their first job. as a result, they lack the experience to effectively manage a team much less a new Crimson/ BI product. i've seen the whole nine yards when it comes to how employees are treated starting from yelling, harassment, to being put on focus/development plans for no good reason.

    - Managers don't value work life balance and treat employees as if they are disposable.

    - Salary is way below market standard for a job that involves such a high degree of client management and such long hours (expect 60-70 hour weeks at the least)

    Treat your employees in a more professional manner and incentive them to stay in the firm

    I worked at Advisory Board full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    You are encouraged to help out and improve processes, quality, doing things better, etc. People can be very intelligent and friendly. Benefits like matching 401K are terrific. 5 weeks vacation is also very terrific. Ability to work from home sometimes is appreciated. People can be very helpful and aren't selfish about sharing what they know to help you out.

    Cons

    Terribly compensation compared to industry standards. Upper management (e.g., directors) can be highly overpaid and completely useless (aka, what do they do all day???). Quality of outsourced teams in India is very hit-or-miss, and when they are misses, they are serious misses. Lack of across the board accountability (e.g., some of the India developers are just terrible and unsalvageable, yet they are still here with no repercussions). Huge lack of oversight of the outsourced teams, resulting in a different set of standards, a lack of quality in work, and a lack of unity across all of development. Company is getting more and more bureaucratic. Work/life balance is great in theory but completely unrealistic and missing in execution. People work a lot of long hours every day and on the weekends, and this is not just specific to development, it's across all roles in all departments. People are promoted without any training and it shows in lack of hands-on day-to-day duties that are necessary in leadership roles. Lack of formalized process to help new employees come onboard most effectively. At best, it's a chicken-with-no-head process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Management needs to get better about their soft skills. They need to listen to people's needs and concerns to help the company grow most optimally without unnecessary turnover. If people feel like they aren't being listened to and their concerns addressed, they will leave out of frustration. When you lose your A-grade players, you are going to find yourself in trouble. Management also needs to have an all-across-the-board bar for standards and not lower them because they are desperate to fill employment quotas. Management needs to compensate competitively to the market because it is a tight market right now for good employees.
