Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to remain in touch with the "worker bees". I know you have a lot on your plates. But we all do. And if you want to create an atmosphere of loyalty and keep your best employees, let them know that you value their opinions & show them genuine concern about their issues.

    I have been working at Aetna full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Pay and Benefits are very good. Working conditions good.

    Cons

    Culture has shifted from very focused and directed to many separate fiefdoms. Enterprise planning and execution has degraded over the last 3 years. Overall quality of employee work product and professional standards has degraded. Very uneven levels of top management level ability and leadership depending on the organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Take responsibility, make decisions and get into the details of what is happening on the ground floor. Evaluate the workforce and reduce reliance on high end consultants and offshore contractors.

    Overall positive experience in opportunities but size of organization and conflicting priorities create increased work.

    I have been working at Aetna full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Large organization, can find many opportunities to do projects that interest you;
    Flexible work arrangements;
    Good 401k and life benefits

    Cons

    Constant pressure to do 'more with less' as they compete against WellPoint and United on cost per member but need to invest more in systems to improve this markedly.

    Impacts to staffing done through outside consulting group and may not have fully understood resource values or how the operations really work.

    Talk work life balance, but do not enable it.

    For a healthcare insuracne company, employees pay a higher share than most companies that buy from Aetna.

    If not located in Hartford, opportunities for advancement are more difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The people are the value and they need support through a well thought out system improvement, not patchwork efforts.
