I have been working at Aetna full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

At a time of economic difficulty in the U.S. it's good to be employed and Aetna is a paycheck with medical benefits.

    Cons

Aetna used to be a great company to work for. Now, either because of health care reform/Obama Care or maybe just the changes in leadership I wouldn't recommend Aetna as a choice for employment. The attitude of what they call senior management is one of almost disdain toward those who actually do the work. The subtle “sit down shut up and do as you’re told” atmosphere is prevalent among almost all management with no one to speak for or defend the employees. They’ve cut back drastically on the workforce and now require double and triple workloads for those left. In the mean time they’re hiring and training overseas and will eventually move most of the remaining jobs to off shore locations. If you’re just entering the work force Aetna may be an option to get some experience and training but don’t look to this company as a career move. You will most certainly be disappointed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Before decisions are made at least make an attempt to know the basic requirement of the jobs affected. Six Sigma works only if you know the steps required to get something done, not by creating a non-certified level (orange belt?!) just to save money. Restore the respect and empathy that used to be Mother Aetna.

I worked at Aetna as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

    Great work life balance
    Excellent management team in Omaha
Above Average work facility, security and work tools
    Excellent Compensation
    No smoking on company grounds
    Periodic on-site food vendors
    Great camaraderie
The HR Team was great to work with-both in Omaha, and in Connecticut

    Cons

Drug screening and background checks on temporary customer service positions is expensive, and a waste of money-Even though candidates are told at the beginning of the interview that drug screens and BGI's are conducted, they lie, lie, lie to your face about their willingness and ability to participate in these processes. Omaha is the world capital for the customer service industry. Aetna is the only company in Omaha that follows these processes for temporary jobs. I am not condoning crime or illicit drug taking, but the job is temporary, and only pays $12.50 an hour.

There is no real plan for managing the new copy machines, printers and faxes installed in the Omaha facility. If a copy machine goes down, there is no process in plan to have it repaired. It will sit idle for week. A local point of contact should be chosen and trained for managing this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't forget your team in Omaha-they are important too!
