A good solid company but communication has faltered with the numerous organizational changes over the last few years.

Pros

Aetna is a well intentioned company with solid integrity. It treats its employees moderately well although the constant attrition of benefits is a challenge like every company these days. It still has a family feel in many offices and offers telecommuting opportunities in many departments.

Cons

The current mantra is "creative destruction' and, from within the company, it seems more destructive than creative. Core businesses seems to get short shrift although results are still required. Its odd.

Advice to Management

Messaging needs to be highly coordinated and disseminated throughout the organization not just emails from on high with an occasional webcast managers meeting.

    Pros

Aetna provides reasonably good compensation and benefits. Senior management clearly has a strategy for the company and communicates better than most executive teams to the organization. Integration of Coventry acquisition will be a big test. Most of the people I work with are top notch.

    Cons

Aetna culture is still dominated by its Hartford commercial insurance mentality and while senior leaders talk about taking risk, it really does not happen. Most staff functions like HR are now self service so line management carries the burden. Emphasis on advancing women and people of color makes career advancement even more challenging for the remainder.

    Advice to Management

New technology leadership is needed at the top to compete in the evolving health care industry.

    Pros

Fantastic coworkers; working in Health Care in the current political environment can be exciting

    Cons

The company has consistently taken benefits from long-time employees. Over the years, they have taken away free parking, increased our benefit premiums, and most recently took 5 PTO days away from long-term employees who already had earned the days. They seem to be squeezing out the older workers and hiring more youth. Also LOTS of temps are working here (no benefits to be paid). Senior management are invisible to the general population ... there is a caste system, huge chasm between the senior execs and the worker bees.

    Advice to Management

You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. You want employees to bend over backwards for you? Treat them with respect, listen to them, and stop taking things away (like the days that allow us to rest and recuperate). Be more visible. Walk the corridors and speak with employees once in a while.
