Former Employee - Independent Sales Agent in Parkersburg, WV

I worked at Aflac as a contractor for more than a year

Pros

Flexibility, own boss, oppurtunities, job sercurity, earnings oppurtunity, training.

Cons

Business opps run dry, unless you are willing to drive hours and hours away. Too many agents for one area at times, especially when there are no zones and agents can be from anywhere.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Training is great, but sometimes they expect too much from agents.

Current Employee - Coordinator in Columbus, GA

I have been working at Aflac full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Profit Sharing bonus and strong attempt to be family oriented. The Employee Appreciation Week, which rewards the employees with local trips and goodies for their families and the profit sharing bonus right before Thanksgiving, is something that has remained consistent throughout the life of the company and can be a big seller for employees in the Columbus area. This is not something offered in other local companies.

    Cons

The more time with the company, the less respect for your knowledge. Right now there is a turn towards new eyes, with little value found for tenured employees. Promotions are based on popularity and personal relationships, versus work ethic and production. It's can be demotivating, as you end up with managers, not meant to "lead," in positions they are not qualified. Additional people are hired by that management, leading to more none qualified people on the staff, leaving the tenured employees and even the knowledgeable employees to hold down the fort. Unfortunately, the latter employees are not the promoted employees...this is not a rare story and some may say "Welcome to the Corporate world."

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management (Officers) should consider more communication further downwards, versus with their direct reports (Senior Managers and Managers). There is a strong gap, with the complete story not making it up to top management. It's sad and so many employees are used to this breakdown and they are just riding with it and learning to just roll with the punches, versus fight for the success of the company.
