Current Employee - Research Technician in Albany, NY
Current Employee - Research Technician in Albany, NY

I have been working at Albany Medical Center full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

The best thing is that I was hired without any prior research experience, just a BSc. So it is the perfect place to get your foot in the door.

Great learning environment, ability to make my own schedule and to gain independence and publications in research projects as a technician, great seminars and lectures by scientists from around the country.

Cons

Your job is at the mercy of grant funding.
No bonuses. Took a very long time to get a raise.

A horrible place to work, esp as your first full time job out of college. Gives a bad outlook on the real world.

I have been working at Albany Medical Center full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Not very many, the benefits.

    Cons

Management pays no attention to their employees. Anyone who is good at their job becomes responsible for picking up the slack of other employees and management lets them get away with it. There is no supervision and the good employees are taken advantage of. The turnover rate in the specific dept I'm employed in is extremely high.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to your employees. Make sure they are doing their job right and completely. We should see your faces at least twice a week. Check up on each clinic, and send coverage when there is someone out sick or on vacation.

I worked at Albany Medical Center full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Albany Medical Center is a wonderful place to gain experience and learn. It is a large, academic hospital with a diverse environment. As a Respiratory Therapist, you can develop a strong foundation for your future.

    Cons

While AMC is a great place to learn, it comes with its challenges. Working as a Respiratory Therapist can be difficult mainly due to poor management. The department itself has amazing potential, but it is inhibited by poor management that lacks the ability to embrace their employees. Pay is also very low. Begining RT salary is only around $21 per hour.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have a strong workforce. Learn to embrace your employees and hear their concerns. With this, you could develop a strong Respiratory Therapy department that can serve as a model department for the area.
