Current Employee - R&D Specialist  in  Baton Rouge, LA
Current Employee - R&D Specialist in Baton Rouge, LA

Pros

Albemarle hires highly skilled people and expects a lot of work out of you. As a company there is much good to say about Albemarle it has survived for almost 100 years constantly reinventing itself as old products go away there are new ones to replace it. The lower managers are top notch people in general. Highly experienced and generally really nice people.

Cons

There are fairly frequent waves of layoffs. There is forced ranking which can create an unnecessarily unsettling work environment. Young people are identified by management and promoted regularly often at the expense of others who are smarter and may work harder. The performance review system is rife with favoritism. Facilities are not well maintained.

    Pros

Albemarle has some good benefits including 9/80 schedules (in Houston anyway), lots of vacation days, and friendly coworks.

    Cons

Upper management doing nothing about the serious issue with retaining new engineers. There is no motivation for employees to work hard because the company does things like giving no raises this year despite company-wide record sales and several million dollar cost savings projects (don't worry, the CEO got a huge bonus!).
