I have been working at Alberta Health Services full-time for more than a year

Pros

Chance to do meaningful work with bright people
Competitive salary; defined benefit pension plan

Cons

The bureaucracy makes it very difficult to get things done, particularly if you're new to the organization. The expense scandals of 2012 continue to hover over the organization, making it very difficult to travel even when required and to claim reasonable travel expenses. Rolling changes in expense claim forms (very confusing) challenging. Caution re salary vs take-home expectations -- deductions in the range of 42% can be a surprise. Don't expect a nice workspace

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Patient care is important, so is employee morale.

I have been working at Alberta Health Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Multiculturalism is a definite plus as one gets to work with people from people from different background. Growing opportunities are also aplenty if one stays loyal and professional in this big, new organization. Working environment can be laid-back depending on where one works. Overall compensation package is pretty good for someone whose looking for a job with high job security.

    Cons

In order to climb to the top, one might want to be good in playing politics. Departmental structures can be disorganized and often times run by someone whose less qualified resulting in constant attacks from the media.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Way too many rigid and outdated policies are in place. Hire someone who has a vision, someone with a track record of achievements, NOT someone who has been in the government sector for far too long or someone involved in the academia because real world and textbooks rarely mix in senior/executive management. Eliminate red tapes, cut out politics, and come to a consensus as to how to move forward positively as an entity instead of playing politics in order to defer real world problems.
