I worked at Alcatel-Lucent as an intern

    Pros

senior people are very helpful and willing to teach. It is still a good place for research and learning. Arrangement for your own work is flexible.

    Cons

People are worried about cutoffs which keeps on during the past few years. The company lost a lot of famous guys who worked here of tens of years.

A large company with a few benefits but many of the drawbacks that come with large companies.

I have been working at Alcatel-Lucent full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Name recognition in the industry and with customers, and a broad product line. Although the company is struggling, many of the individual employees are very good to work with. Opportunities to move laterally within the company are available due to its size.

    Cons

Employees have endured round after round of layoffs for more than a decade, which affects employee morale. This is mostly a result of changes in the industry and in spending patterns of its largest customers. Still, this results in long term career uncertainty, and has certainly blocked advancement of many highly-skilled individuals, who would have been promoted several times in a growing company. In the current shrinking environment, there is no opportunity for advancement, because positions at all levels are being eliminated - not created.
When opportunities open up in a new technology, the company prefers to hire experienced personnel rather than train those already working for the company in new skills. There is a lot of pressure on training budgets and travel budgets.
There is also a lot of bureaucracy, as one might expect from a large international company. A variety of corporate functions are spread across the globe, and approvals or consultations may be overnight tasks due to time zones. Employees cannot contact HR by phone and must direct questions to their managers (who do have access to HR).
Benefits have also suffered cuts, although the health plan seems pretty good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just like individuals are advised to have 5- and 10-year plans, this company is in dire need of sound 5- and 10-year plans. Rather, it appears that the company's leadership strikes out on a new "improvement plan" every year or so, along with a few rounds of layoffs and reorganizations. It appears to lack a sound 5-year strategic plan.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
