I worked at Alere

Pros

Opportunity to learn new things and get involved in projects, nice people, growth through acquisition leads to plenty of future opportunity

Cons

Management at the top doesn't change but they are quick to make changes everywhere else, Too much talk about leadership development with no action, matrix structure doesn't work well for an organization that big

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dump the health management business, it gets in the way of a perfectly good diagnostics business and drags down earnings every quarter.

Strong company with good benefits. Disconnect with Alere but hopefully will mend soon. Not a lot of promo possibilities.

I have been working at Alere

    Pros

Working from home is great benefit and comes with all the perks. Most of the Wellbeing employees work from home so a lot of them take advantage of it. Can work far away from the office in the state and not have to worry. The work is relatively easy and does allow some flexibility.

    Cons

Wellbeing side is still struggling to institute corporate policies and give clean cut black and white answers. It's the classic "always want to be the nice guy to your face but if you do something wrong we will smash you for it". The constant shift in policies, wishy washy decision making, hiding of bad news, and double talk is very rampant.

Management wants it both ways: They want you to work from home to save the company money but once you are out there, you are on your own in terms of any career advancement. They also turn the fact that you work from home against you and use it to discriminate. Even though the majority of the company is remote and working from home, all of the opportunities that are worth anything are to those in the office. People get promoted not based on skill but more on how much sucking up to the right people they do. It's all in how much they see your face and how much you suck up to the right people. It's evident as those in power have less skill, knowledge, and experience then people that have been at the company for ages but work from home. Personal relationships FAR outweigh skill and ability here. If you want to move up, get ready to put your chap stick on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Playing a dangerous game giving friends promotions and valuing how much you see their face over others who have more skill, ability, and tact. Quit playing both sides of the coin and make decisions and policies that are direct and STICK WITH THEM. By trying to paint everything as rainbows and butterflies, you are just making employees disgruntled and angry. It doesn't help. Get some real leadership and make REAL decisions. It's time to put the big boy pants on and join the corporate work place. Stop punishing remote employees for taking on a benefit you offered (and in most cases forced) by denying promotions, compensatory benefits, and using it as an excuse to deny rights and benefits.
