I have been working at Alliant Techsystems

Pros

Previous management made it important that the opinions of every employee were considered if they were offered. You were never made to feel like you weren't a critical piece of doing business.

Cons

Current (new) management has little insight into what's going on, but are happy to make changes at will for their own enjoyment. The little people suffer, and nobody cares.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace quality people with QUALITY people, not just whoever is next in line to fill the spot based on seniority or time in the trenches. Consider that some of the people in the trenches have not gotten out of them for a reason.

    Pros

Managers; both lower and upper are well compensated.
Overall; compensation for the lower jobs keeps a person able to pay their bills.
    Yearly bonus to all.
    Good invironment.

    Cons

The Leadership that this company teaches their Management tends to keep the lower worker stuck in the lower realm of jobs.
If someone is excellent in their job they can be easily overlooked for promotion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look beyond the younger workers and see that some of your value is in the experience of those over 40. Don't hold back on promoting because of a worker being valuable in their current position. If someone has been in the position for a long time maybe it's time for you to see that they can be just as valuable in a promoted position.
Get out and mingle more with the blue-collar workers; daily, if not weekly.
Give credit where it is due instead of taking that credit as your due for being the Manager of a department. Realize that giving credit where it is due doesn't take anything from your position as a Manager.
True leadership starts at the top and the top would be wise to keep this in mind. Start mingling. Also: keep in mind that giving advantage to sycophants does get noticed and fosters resentment.

ATK - company at a crossroads

I have been working at Alliant Techsystems

    Pros

ATK is a great place to work for those who want to be agressive with their career and who want all the pro's and con's of increasing responsibility. There is visibility up to high level management for those who are considered top talent.

    Cons

ATK has grown by acquisition and as such many of its business systems, processes and leaders function in silo's. This is being addressed, but it is slow at times. In order for ATK to move to the next level and regularly compete with the primes - business efficiencies need to be made. ATK is also at a crossroads with their brand identity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be a stronger Enterprise presence. Too often groups are allowed to operate on their own rather than having Corporate drive and enforce common policies and practices.
