I have been working at Allied Consultants (Texas)

Pros

Small company that focuses on positions within Texas (mostly the greater Austin area). Most positions are with Public Companies and State Agencies so the positions have lots of stability. I really like their approach to recruiting; personable but forward and honest.

Cons

They are a smaller company and they work with public companies and State agencies, so things can progress can be slower than some other agencies. Despite this the recruiters and managers do a great job of keeping people informed of any status changes.

    I have been working at Allied Consultants (Texas) as a contractor for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Allied offers multi-month/year, staff augmentation contracts with Texas state agencies, municipal gov't, and public utilities. Alied will guide the applicant through the paper-heavy submission process, and generally will keep you informed about the contract's outlook. Pay and limited benefits are delivered as promised.

    Cons

    Allied Consultants don't offer real consultancy to clients. The paycheck will not buy you professional challenge. If you're experienced with med/large-scale software implementations, or change management of any kind, you will be disappointed at the slow pace of government work. If you're bothered by bureaucratic waste and inefficiency, you will be bothered on these projects.

    Unsurprisingly, Allied Consultants' own management reflects their clients' low levels of professionalism, efficiency, and acceptance of mediocrity. Nobody in upper management has ever dealt with any organizations other than government, having started as state programmers themselves before going into the business of renting programmers to the state.

    Pros

    Pay is never in question; they will pay you even when the client is dragging their feet on pay.
    Fairly good HR responsiveness and communications about benefits questions, etc.

    Cons

    Ownership has become complacent and is out of touch with actual work and clients. Since clients are governments (municipal, county, state) and organizational (ERCOT), change occurs somewhat slower than private industry, but the leadership has fallen behind. Allied is now mainly order-takers ("we think we need a programmer, and you provided one before"), rather than business analysts. Allied is increasingly mismatching skills with needs because they're taking things for granted. If this keeps up, they'll be just another body shop submitting anonymous bodies for published needs, along with every other body shop in the country responding to public job listings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get back in touch with your clients, actually ask your consultants what they're doing. Showing up to deliver the pay stub used to be more of a conversation than it is now, when leadership only cares about lunch plans, not real conversations.
