I worked at Allscripts

Pros

- It's a good way to break into the healthcare IT industry since they will hire anyone with a pulse.
- Good PTO and benefits.
- Some flexibility for working remotely depending on your department/manager.

Cons

- Clients HATE you from the start no matter how competent you might personally be, because they are so used to receiving awful service from Allscripts.
- It can be difficult, if not impossible, to find the information you need to do your job. Clients also complain about the difficulty of locating information. Sometimes you get the impression that development is a sort of "man behind the emerald curtain."
- Cronyism is king. A lot of the managers are surprisingly unprofessional in behavior and appearance.
- The pay is a joke. Really talented professionals earn salaries on par with day laborers.
- The CEO's primary interest is lining his pockets and he doesn't mind destroying the company in the process.
- Have fun trying to work with your "colleagues" off-shore. The only training that Allscripts apparently provides to off shore resources is how to refuse responsibility for any work that isn't exactly spelled out in a document somewhere. To be fair, it may be not so much that they are lazy as that they don't understand English well enough to translate requests that are not scripted.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

What's the point? Management is making big money in the short term and will have retired to their yachts and villas by the time the Allscripts house of cards comes tumbling down. They aren't interested in making Allscripts a better place to work - they can undoubtedly buy all the good press they think they need.

I have been working at Allscripts

    Pros

Great benefits, 23 days PTO, 26 days after 5 yrs of service. BCBS health insurance.
    Flexibility to work remotely
    No micro-management
Growing business opportunity in healthcare IT

    Cons

Unrealistic performance goals that pit employees against each other. No one wants to look out for the next person becaue they want to make sure they shine on their own performance review. Focus is more on getting calls closed instead of making sure the client's problem is resolved. Clients frustrated with the product sometimes use the Voice of client support reps survey to voice their opinion. The negative review affects the support rep on their review. Management preaches career development, but your career is in your own hands. Your skills and detication will only get you so far in this company. Buddy system rules in Allscripts. Most of the time the manager already knows who they will pick for a position before it is even posted. Last few product releases did not go through beta, so they were full of bugs. We spend a majority of the year pushing out patches to fix the previous releases. The latest insult is a hiring freeze for support here in the US, in order to create new positions in India. The actually had the nerve to tell us "we are creating the middle class in India", well what about the middle class right here in the US

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Managers should be promoted from within so that they know the product and can offer some support when needed. Provide training opportunities for employees so that you can promote from within instead of going to India. Use performance reviews to help employees find ways to improve rather than a way to tear employees down. Test products before sending them out to the clients. Bring back the fun. The environment is stressful, happy employees lead to happy customers.
