Pros

Fair, honest and progressive company. The current management team is the best that I've seen in my 27 years with the company. I am comfortable that management is working to make things the best possible.

Cons

Insurance is a volatile industry. Not just Allstate but all of them. It can be quite the roller coaster sometimes.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stay on the current course. Things feel like we are gaining ground and doing well. Keep listening to the field and making them feel that their opinions matter.

I have been working at Allstate

    Pros

The training is great. You learn a lot about claims handling in a very short time. Most middle management is approachable. Lots of PTO days. Co-workers are helpful. Benefits are decent. Pension and 401k.

    Cons

Upper management is rarely around and when they are they don't want the truth about what is going on in the units. They keep bad managers on at the expense of the employees. Morale is low and people don't complain becuase there is a sense you will be "blackballed." There are a lot of people there 20+ years so you will not get vacation time when you want it. You will have to work weekends. The claim volume is crazy. They care more about customer service scores and contact numbers than claim file quality.

If you have an option other than Allstate take it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop adding additional work onto employees to improve customer scores. Less claim volume and the scores will go up. Get rid of bad managers.

It's not "what you know" but "how you show"

Current Employee - Product Manager in Northbrook, IL

I have been working at Allstate

    Pros

Generous and flexible paid time off
    Transparency with upper management
    Great, friendly co-workers
Upper management wants to make it a good place to work
    Convenient location for suburbanites

    Cons

Knowledge, experience, worth ethic, and accomplishments will not guarantee promotions or even pay increases that keep up with the pace of inflation
Many people in senior management levels lack technical insurance knowledge; Some of the smartest people in the organization are the "doers" in the trenches who are not being rewarded for their contributions
Many great employees excluded from sufficient promotional, pay increase, or recognition; Others reaping benefits of large rewards based on who they know and "how they show" (i.e., their appearance and demeanor)
Corporation is so large that it is impossible for employees to truly understand the needs of agents and customers
Overwhelming systems overhead makes it extremely difficult to respond to marketplace trends quickly
Being detail oriented as an employee is detrimental to their career growth
Way too much movement within the organization, employees never have to live with the consequence of their actions because they have already moved onto their next role

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize that there is more to an employee's performance and day-to-day contributions than how they present themselves in meetings
Do not overvalue leadership skills; although they are important, it is not more important than true experience, technical knowledge, and work ethic
Shrink the spread of merit increases. Some people who are getting 0-1% raises are just as valuable, bright, hard working, and dedicated as some of the people getting promoted every one to two years
