I worked at Allstate full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

The company catagorizes it's agents as "Independent Contractors," or business owners. It is a good learning experience if you strive to be an entreprenuer. Each agency is responsible for hiring, training, and paying their staff (if approved by Home Office.) Highly recommend selling
Allstate as an Independent Agent, not as an Exclusive Agent.

Cons

Allstate sets very high agent premium expectations, and if not met, they can terminate your contract. They classify their agents as Independent Contracts, but it only for their financial benefit. Agents can only sell Allstate Products, they own all the policies, if you decide to sell your agency-they have to approve it, they have you sign a 2 yr non-compete contract, they own your phone lines, and they can terminate your contract at anytime. They will hire just about anyone because they are not investing any money, if hired you have to invest your money and sign leases. If they terminate your contract, your still responsible for lease and due to the contract you can not open another agency for 2 years.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop lowereing commissions and increasing production requirements. Let the agency owners "run" their own business, or classify them as employees. Stop requiring "life insurance, annuity, and variable annuity" premium production as a means to terminate agents contracts. Let agencies own their own phone lines.

    Pros

People are very friendly and easy to get along with. It is very laid back and a good work environment. They take work/life balance very seriously and care about your well being.

    Cons

The compensation starts off very low. You can be doing the same thing with another company and make two times more money. The workload doesn't match the compensation for some positions.

I have been working at Allstate full-time

    Pros

Good people, many, many long-term employees 25+ years supporting a strong agency force. Financially stable, profitable company. Flexible work hours. Short term development opportunities to work at H/O in Northbrook. Feels like a family.

    Cons

Even with flex start times, many exempt employees regularly work 10-12 hour days with no allowance for comp-time. As a result,work/life balance suffers. Always looking to trim expenses, educational opportunties/tuition reimbursement are often not approved. Workforce reduction over the last 5 years in the agency force as well as the regional support office has hurt morale. Salaries are average or to below average for the Seattle area. Senior management displays cliquish attitude.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't overlook loyal employees and look for ways to mentor, develop and challenge them. Be aware of a significant lack of work/life balance due to cuts in staffing Too many are being required to do the work of 2 or 3 people. Keep in mind that employee satisfaction and recognition is critical to your success. Look for ways to encourage employees to represent and advocate the Allstate brand.
