Pros

Alpine Electronics is synonymous with high quality and luxury within the car multimedia market. For the most part, co-workers are friendly, hard working and enjoyable to work with. Management is hit or miss depending on your group. Information is shared and generally available. Not only do you get to work with one of the top car audio companies but also clients like Honda and Mercedes Benz. Monthly employee meetings help give a big picture view of the company from the different locations. Employees are recognized each month with gift certificates. Movie tickets and raffles for gift certificates are given out to those who carpool. The health, dental, and vision benefits are above average. Each year they have a family picnic and Christmas party. Depending on your team, there might also be additional group lunches or perks - such as getting a top of the line car stereo system installed in your car for free or getting to test drive different cars . Employee discounts for the products are generous (considering what the retail prices are). There are opportunities to go to places like Japan or shows like CES and there are are always after work activities going on - such as a local bar, dinner, or a variety of sports. Finally, you can catch a glimpse of the annual show car being built as CES approaches.

Cons

Being a Japanese company, the Japanese work culture is very prominent - if you want to make a good impression then expect to work some extra, long hours. It helps to know how to speak Japanese as well. Promotions for individuals seem to be based more on years of service, rather than performance. Annual raises and bonuses are laughable as evident with the number of employees that leave. Employee morale doesn't seem very high as the car audio market is dwindling and the car navigation market is very competitive. The products are very expensive and often ship later than initially advertised.

Advice to Management

Reward the rock star employees and boost employee morale. Deliver your products when you say you will and lower the prices.

    Pros

People are creative and have good ideas. It is refreshing that even new people to the team can have a positive impact. Benefits are solid. Managers actually care about their teams. Glad I joined the team. Nagasako-san is very different than any other Japanese executive I've meet and will take Alpine in the right direction.

    Cons

The company should reflect more of the US methods of development and getting quality products to market faster. Being conservative is safe but we have talent to be unique. We just need the freedom to do so - Japan and the US do business very differently.

    Advice to Management

Be part of active talent management. Sometimes as a manager you have to have the tough conversation and make hard decisions but it is for the good of the company. Don't avoid the ugly stuff. Have courage and teach others how to have courage. Well timed tactful, aggressive, proactive honesty is a good thing.
