I have been working at Altria full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

- Excellent compensation, starts at $54k for territory sales managers - 401k / Profit Sharing is tough to beat. 3% match 401k plus 15% of annual salary - Territory sales manager get company car, computer, internet and cell phone bill reimbursed - Company is responsible, does not market its products to kids

Cons

- Tobacco industry is declining, so cost-cutting will only continue - Altria plays it too safe, always afraid of getting sued - Countless brand extensions that nobody wants. Not innovative enough - Altria outsources almost all IT, despite how much they rely on it. - A lot of people at HQ are full of themselves, not responsive to feedback - Altria's biggest opportunity is with advancement opportunities. There's no way to search internally for open positions in the field sales force or at HQ. Also, Altria is more interested in your willingness to relocate (not have a family) than your talent.

Advice to Management

- Setup internal system for viewing vacancies, advancement or developmental opportunities - Recruit more true sales people, not kids trying to be managers as soon as they can - Trade programs are too complex ... Retailers don't have MBAs. Keep it simple - Encourage more collaboration, more 360 feedback - Current PPP process is painful, not valuable & a waste of time - Invest more on in-house IT ... India isn't cutting it

    Pros

    Salary, benefits, profit-sharing, company vehicle

    Cons

    High pressure with little control of actual results. Management ran things like a glee club. Performance is based on how much of a cheerleader and passion you show for all the new "exciting" programs. I felt like I was part of a junior-high school pep club where energy and excitement was more important than results. Objectives are completely arbitrary.

    I worked at Altria full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Decent management team, hours are ok. Pays above minimum wage.

    Cons

    Upper management in the company honestly cares very little about their employees

    Advice to Management

    Learn to work together; stop throwing each other under the bus. Remember ownership? Practice what you preach, guys.
