I have been working at Altria full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

- Complex business environment to compete within
- Opportunity to create solutions to challenging business problems
- Management is responsive to work/life balance issues
- Earn respect and autonomy in your position

Cons

- Promote people too fast. People often are more focused on getting to the next position instead of doing a good job in their current position
- Competition is fierce and can be cut-throat
- Declining industry and a feeling of looming 'cuts'
- Big difference in the developmental opportunities provided to 'Advancement' candidates vs. everyone else

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less emphasis on bucketing people into 'advancement' vs 'not advancement'. This constant differentiation is causing a split within the organization that causes a lack of collaboration on business initiatives.

    I worked at Altria full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Salary, benefits, profit-sharing, company vehicle

    Cons

    High pressure with little control of actual results. Management ran things like a glee club. Performance is based on how much of a cheerleader and passion you show for all the new "exciting" programs. I felt like I was part of a junior-high school pep club where energy and excitement was more important than results. Objectives are completely arbitrary.

    Pros

    - Great brands: Marlboro, Copenhagen, Skoal, Black & Mild
    - Solid balance sheet and market capitalization (Fortune 200)
    - Culture of camaraderie in some parts of the organization that make it fun to come to work every day
    - Good compensation and benefits
    - Commitment to attract and retain talent

    Cons

    - Lack of empathy with the consumer
    - Risk adverse culture that negatively impact company's ability to innovate beyond the core business
    - Controversial product category (Tobacco)
    - Declining cigarette category which is responsible for 90%+ of Altria revenues
    - Low diversity in some parts of the organization, which translates in old-school line of thought

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Need to create a Global Innovation organization that is responsible to drive new breakthrough concepts towards commercialization, aside from Marketing and Product Development. Just because it's important for employees to drive innovation in what they do, does not mean that there is no need for an Innovation organization. Just like the responsibility of every employee to exhibit fiduciary responsibility does not preclude the existence of a Finance department.
