I worked at Amazon Lab126 as an intern (less than an year)

Pros

Working at a renowned company with fast paced development and latest technology.
Working with some brilliant people from the industry.
Good compensation.

Cons

Worst work life balance. People seem to be working very late everyday.
Work is assigned even on weekends to be done at home or office.
Internship program not well structured. Mentors are assigned name sake as they are busy with their own tasks and have no time for interns.
Managers expect too much in less time and no guidance at all.
HR team is very rude to interns.
Lot of newly hired managers who don't have a clear idea of the ultimate goal.
Managers are not interested in the mentoring of interns.
Very stressful experience in my entire career.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Strive for providing employees with work life balance and not encourage them to work overtime and on weekends.

I worked at Amazon Lab126 full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - Working on consumer products that are popular with the public
    - Opportunity to work with and learn from a lot of intelligent people
    - Being a part of the Amazon vision

    Cons

    - Corporate politics is alive and strong here.
    - Frugal to a fault.
    - Management doesn't like to promote from within and often times would rather hire from outside even if that person has no direct experience.
    - Lack of vision from senior executives.
    - Due to lack of vision, product definition takes place too slowly leaving engineers scrambling to deliver a product in too short of a time frame. During prototyping phase, this doesn't leave enough time to address problems and provide fixes before another build comes up.
    - Management likes to force unproven technology into products during short development cycles much to the chagrin of engineers.
    - Although this is a technology company, certain groups within the company have too strong a say into what engineering should and shouldn't design, even though they have no direct experience.
    - Little to no career advancement opportunities.
    - RSU vesting period leaves employee with very little if they do not stay until the multi-year vesting period ends.
    - Too many managers and not enough engineers. "Too much to to, too little time" due there being a lack of engineers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Promote from within
    - Start product definition earlier so that engineers aren't scrambling to meet short product delivery schedules
    - Let your engineering groups determine best course of action rather than being forced into certain designs from other groups
    - Get some vision
    - Hire more engineers
