Current Employee - Software Development Engineer Intern in Seattle, WA
Current Employee - Software Development Engineer Intern in Seattle, WA

I have been working at Amazon.com as an intern (less than an year)

Pros

Money
Big Brand Name
Lots of good internal videos for learning

Cons

Lot of politics.
Deep learning curve due to lot of customized development environment.
If you seek help, you will be told that you can not handle things independently. On the other hand if you try to resolve things on your own, you will be called to have bad judgement for not asking for help.
Bug in your code will be called blunders but if you find bugs in existing code, then those will be learnings.
Middle management interprets company policies in their own way than what possibly actually it would mean

    I worked at Amazon.com full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    their architecture
    internal eco system
some of the best minds are working around you
    visionary management

    Cons

you will not know how much you lose until you come out. Amazon has the ability to suck you until dry - and make you enjoy it at the same time. there are lot of pros as listed , but you will never know when you are going to be the scape goat for some silly thing like a server peaking its CPU.
Oncall rotation is another thing that can feed on your life as a dementor.
but beware - you will not notice any of this unless you come out - or they send you out .

    Pros

Great culture and a fun place to work. Everyone is intelligent and drives each other to be better. Be prepared to work hard and be pushed to do well. Although they pay very well and as a result expect you to perform. Firings will happen but they are often expected and never unwarranted. Also the concept of moving groups or leaving for new opportunities is accepted here and never feels awkward. Many people even end up coming back after they leave.

    Cons

Can be stressful at times not terribly bad though, and occasionally Amazon shows its frugality in ways that are annoying to employees.
