Very bad for outside (non-campus) hires at all levels

Business Analytics (Current Employee)
Bangalore (India)

I have been working at Amazon.com full-time for less than a year

Pros# Good brand
# Outsiders think this is a great place to work for

Cons# Very bad work culture.
# Outsiders get more money than insiders but are hammered on the career level - joining a level lower
# Most of the leaders joined as SDEs and have only coding background. They get promoted to managers fast and end up hiring ppl from industry several years senior to them. Like a Yahoo director may report to a senior manager here. Having no people management or experience in any other field other than coding, they make life miserable for product managers and everyone else who does'nt code
# Career growth tied to building new systems. So employees actively try to say existing well working systems need to be phased out and build new buggy systems
# They like to build new systems for same reason as above
# No clear career progression
# Too much bureaucratic
# No respect for non-engineering divisions
# Insiders think they know everything and nothing to learn from anyone
# HR non existent
# Chances are high that you will end up reporting to a person several years your junior in the industry (infact he may have reported to a person reporting to you in any other company)

Advice to Senior Management# Don't hire anyone from outside. Just retain your campus hires. THis is a company of campus hires

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
