Pros

Good pay (although not as good as other large tech companies). Fantastic stock growth. It's possible to work 40-45 hours a week and still have a good career there, although this varies a lot by team. It's also possible to advance very quickly if you are motivated and a self-starter.

Cons

Amazon won't give you anything in advancing your career. You have to be a self-starter and go get it yourself. The compensation structure works with a figure called "projected total comp." This means that if you get a decent grant one year, then the stock price goes way up, the next year you will get a tiny grant to keep your projected total comp at a particular level. It's not exactly unfair, but it feels like it if you think of a stock grant as a "bonus." It isn't. Think of stock as salary and you will feel better about compensation.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bump the comp or continue losing your top talent to Google and Facebook.

Current Employee - Software Development Engineer Intern in Seattle, WA

    Pros

Rapid growth and development, always launching new products
A big range of products and services, from retail to audio/video to web services
    Good pay and benefits
Cool web services and other internal tools you can use
Flat structure in the company and a lot of freedom for the engineers. Most teams are small enough that you don't feel like part of a giant company
Many social and career-related intern events
A lot of good engineers and interns for you to talk geek and network with

    Cons

The pay and benefits are not as good as other tech giants like google and facebook
The company is moving so fast that some products are a little crude and don't have the best quality
My team was really understaffed and we were launching a big product so everyone was really burned out. The fact that full time SDEs have to be on-call sucks

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be so frugal! Create a more vibrant and innovative culture. Drive for good quality work not just quantity
