I worked at Amazon.com as a contractor (less than a year)

Pros

Killer, Cool company to work for.

Cons

Killer, cool company to work for - from the outside. Inside, it's an incoherent mess of angst, careful selection of what you say, and top down elite governance.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you are a master in politics, this is your place to shine.

Amazing company to work for, even more so if you know politics

I have been working at Amazon.com full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Fantastic Growth Potential.
    - AMZN is doing things that no other company is doing.
    - Great relocation package if you're willing to move to Seattle.
    - Stock compensation is fantastic.
    - Gives you the warm and fuzzies to have been part of a company that sets the bar/changes the world/is at the forefront of technology and knows that boundaries have to be pushed and broken in order to innovate.
    - So much innovation.
    - Practically limitless strong technical resources at your fingertips.

    Cons

    - Review process is long, tedious and somewhat painful.
    - Not a lot of perks ("frugality" is a core value, which translates to little to no perks. The company discount was a joke and you basically had to buy all your own swag).
    - Not enough to work really hard, in order to earn senior (and higher) roles you *HAVE* to be politically adept (in addition to working really hard).
    - Fantastic Growth Potential (only if you're willing to move to Seattle).
    - Base salaries aren't that strong.

Despite all the cons however, if I had to do it all over again I would change nothing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest a little more in your employees. Pay more attention to those that may not understand office politics, whether intentionally or not. While extroverts get the attention, introverts arguably add more value - recognize this.
