I worked at AmeriCares Foundation

Pros

The salaries are good. With little experience you can get a good title and lots of perks like travel abroad and meeting high level people. There are opportunities for people willing to go along with organizational agendas. Good work/life balance.

Cons

The company culture feels more focused on pleasing donors and raising funds than having a positive impact. There is a lack of transparency within the organization and some of the donation practices are questionable. There's a lack of expertise among the leadership. There's tons of turnover, as people realize what the situation is and quickly leave.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The organization needs less focus on image and more on substance in the work. The focus should be on helping people not on pleasing donors. More transparency and more critical-thinking among the leadership is needed.

I have been working at AmeriCares Foundation full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

AmeriCares is an organization looking to grow and expand its reach to help more people lead healthier lives, an initiative being led by new CEO Michael Nyenhuis. It is an exciting time to join the organization, as you get to shape what it will look like in the years to come.

The company culture is heavily based on collaboration and transparency -- even as an associate, I was encouraged to share my thoughts and insights with leadership, including the CEO.

Almost everyone on staff is a pleasure to work with and passionate about what they do. There are (largely) reasonable work hours, and always a delicious snack awaiting in the kitchen, a perk of your generous coworkers!

    Cons

The salary for entry level positions is on the low end, particularly for Fairfield County, but the benefits package is excellent.

I worked at AmeriCares Foundation full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Working together with the staff - a group of collegial, educated, passionate and mission driven men and women. Educational and rewarding opportunity to learn about global public health. First hand experience traveling to the developing world to witness the challenges faced by victims of natural and manmade disasters was lifechanging.

    Cons

Professional growth and development is challenging in an enviroment where staff wear many hats and have limited time to think strategically or develop plans that would create more efficiencies to get the day to day work done.
