I worked at AmeriCorps full-time (less than an year)

Pros

You feel good about what you're doing (if you're not doing it for the money).
You get a nice education award at the end (except it's taxed as are your stipend checks so make sure to understand how to spend it if you want to avoid owing at the end of the year.)

Cons

I was a member of AmeriCorps state through a very disorganized non-profit. The service itself was good but dealing with the organization that I signed up through was pretty bad. Make sure to check out who you're going to be doing the service through before you sign up because it could make or break your year. Looks like the bigger names (City Year, etc.) have a better management system.

I worked at AmeriCorps full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Free prescriptions from NCCS,
The state VISTA supervisor for my location was very helpful when I had an issues with my assignment and assigned organization
Payment schedule was always on time
Gained some very useful skills for future use

    Cons

    low pay
lack of direct supervision from upper levels to funded organizations
hard to fit in with non VISTA employees because of rules and stipulations of being a VISTA member
not being able to have a second job made it hard to live with the low pay (I couldn't afford to move to my location site so I commuted 113 miles round trip per day)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

please research the organizations requesting funding a little more
visit agencies that NCCS money is going to
provide more direct supervision to site supervisors

I worked at AmeriCorps full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

If you studied hard, graduated from college, and have a pretty good resume, you can work here for significantly less than the minimum wage for a year, if you're lucky, before being cast back into the "job" market.

    Cons

No actual responsibility or institutional support, with rare exceptions. They tax your end-of-serivce stipend.
