I have been working at American Airlines part-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Great people to work with. Flight benefits start from Day One. Benefits offered to part-time. Full-time opportunities available. Can pick up extra hours easily.

Cons

Part-time shifts can be extended without notice, including same day extension. Training is not in-depth.

    Pros

The only reason I can think of working for this Company is for reasons of work schedule flexibility.

    Cons

Sharply declining pay in "real" terms - most employees have experienced an 17% pay cut during Bankruptcy reorganization on top of a 30% pay cut back in 2003. Employees have seen "real" pay decline by almost 50% over the last decade. Pension plans have been "frozen" and no longer exist for future employees. Monthly Medical Insurance premiums have recently quadrupled. Travel benefits (the reason most people go to work for the airlines) are virtually worthless these days because you travel standby and nearly all flights these days are routinely oversold. Hostile Labor Relations Very poor overall employee morale

    Advice to Management

Senior Management is beyond advice in my opinion. New Management is desperately needed. There needs to be a major overall of corporate culture at American if they are to survive long-term. Management contempt for employees is palpable.

  2. It's great if you are a full-time airline employee. . .not as a contractor.

    Pros

Fast paced environment. Good place to learn the airline industry. There are good people to work with despite the bad apples.

    Cons

If you are a contractor, don't expect equal treatment as the full-time employees do. A lot of CYA. Contractors are the first to be used as scapegoats for full-time employee incompetency.

    Advice to Management

Learn that your greatest resource are the ones who have the most passion for their jobs and the success of the airline in mind. I saw too many good people let go for the wrong reasons. Promote from within, in particular the contractors, they are your greatest resource for new ideas. Encourage retirement for those employees that believe that doing the same things may have worked for the past 30 years ago does not translate in today's world.
