I have been working at American Airlines full-time for more than a year

Pros

Travel Benefits if you can use them
Depending on your manager flexibility to work from home when needed
Good number of holidays

Cons

Can't use any earned vacation or sick days until the following year.
Very Political
Gets in their own way to making necessary changes
Poor employee training
Too much weight given to "Subject Matter Experts" rather than skilled IT professionals
Company has no idea what collaboration is or how to encourage it
Buildings are out dated and depressing to work in
Contractors are not treated well, but usually have the better skill set and understanding of how to make things happen
System Architecture is way to complicated
Too many dependencies on 3rd party systems

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of those that are stuck in the old ways and replace them with new skilled itelligent collaborative thinkers.
Get rid of the that's how we have always done it mentality
Train employees on the skills they need to do their jobs
Keep high performing project teams together
Tone down the politics

Doesn't Recommend
Negative Outlook
No opinion of CEO

I have been working at American Airlines full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The only reason I can think of working for this Company is for reasons of work schedule flexibility.

    Cons

Sharply declining pay in "real" terms - most employees have experienced an 17% pay cut during Bankruptcy reorganization on top of a 30% pay cut back in 2003.
Employees have seen "real" pay decline by almost 50% over the last decade.
Pension plans have been "frozen" and no longer exist for future employees.
Monthly Medical Insurance premiums have recently quadrupled.
Travel benefits (the reason most people go to work for the airlines) are virtually worthless these days because you travel standby and nearly all flights these days are routinely oversold.
    Hostile Labor Relations
    Very poor overall employee morale

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior Management is beyond advice in my opinion. New Management is desperately needed.
There needs to be a major overall of corporate culture at American if they are to survive long-term.
Management contempt for employees is palpable.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

It's great if you are a full-time airline employee. . .not as a contractor.

I worked at American Airlines as a contractor for more than a year

    Pros

    Fast paced environment.
Good place to learn the airline industry.
There are good people to work with despite the bad apples.

    Cons

If you are a contractor, don't expect equal treatment as the full-time employees do.
    A lot of CYA.
Contractors are the first to be used as scapegoats for full-time employee incompetency.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn that your greatest resource are the ones who have the most passion for their jobs and the success of the airline in mind. I saw too many good people let go for the wrong reasons. Promote from within, in particular the contractors, they are your greatest resource for new ideas. Encourage retirement for those employees that believe that doing the same things may have worked for the past 30 years ago does not translate in today's world.
