I have been working at American Airlines full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Fantastic travel benefits, even for less-senior employees Some really great people. Company has fine ethics, diversity. Company tried, in the past, to limit outsourcing and protect United States jobs. With restructuring/bankruptcy this is no longer possible, but was a valiant/ethical effort. IT Area, particularly AA.com is improving.

Cons

Some middle management sticking their noses into technical details they don't understand. "Agile" project management philosophy is good, but is overly complicated and customized. Applied in a non-standard way in each department. Lots of legacy, nasty software (SABRE/FOS)

Advice to Management

Fix hiring standards Reduce project funding model complexity further Reduce "agile" complexity to get it to work

I worked at American Airlines full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flight Benefits are great Interesting work Access to senior management Lengthy training when joining Great variety of projects - getting involved with hiring and decisions on where to fly early on Dallas is central so flying anywhere in the country is possible in a weekend

    Cons

Pay is low coming in and stays low through promotions with no yearly increases Work-life balance varies enormously from team to team HR is outsourced to the Philippines so your manager is your sole point of contact

    Advice to Management

The culture is a bit dated, create a more fun environment and you'll get more out of your people.

  2. I would be shocked if this airline is around in 5 more years.

I have been working at American Airlines full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The individuals at the lower levels are great to work with.

    Cons

Pay is horrendous. Management has zero respect for employees. The future is more than a little uncertain. Morale is at an all time low.

    Advice to Management

The fish rots from the head. The most successful airlines all treat their employees with respect, who then turn around and treat the customer with respect. Try it.
