I have been working at American Bar Association full-time

Pros

The American Bar Association is very intricate and has many different areas that you can work in, depending on your interests. The pay is good for a non-profit, the company promotes internal movement and advancement and they treat employees well (time off, benefits, etc.)

Cons

This is a member-driven organization so if you work at the Chicago office, much of their work, unlike DC which is where all the action happens, is focused on their members and less on law-related issues. Management had to go through training this past summer so there will definitely be improvements as far as upper-management understanding what their employees need and how to treat them well. You definitely won't see many, if any, bonuses and for lower level positions, the 2.5% raise is fine, but it's a company-wide raise so there's no difference in additional compensation between those who work hard and those who do nothing all day.

The American Bar Association is very intricate and has many different areas that you can work in, depending on your interests. The pay is good for a non-profit, the company promotes internal movement and advancement and they treat employees well (time off, benefits, etc.)

    Cons

Classic silo organization. Left hand doesn't know what right hand does. Entities want to keep their slice of the pie. Strong resistance to change.
Tech infrastructure is sub-par and is waiting to crash.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean out dead weight, especially middle managers who are grandfathered into positions and know only one (old and inefficient) way of business performance.

    Pros

The ABA has great employee health and pre-tax commuter benefits. There are defined growth paths in certain areas. Staff is generally good to work with, so long as you stay within your department.

    Cons

Unfortunately so many groups work in silos and collaboration is put to the side. While new benefits are being explored nothing yet has been implemented.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote your talent and recognize the valuable ones and work on flushing out some of the stagnant employees.
